Having lived in Western Washington most of my life, I’ve made the drive down to the Long Beach Peninsula many times. One place I always enjoy visiting while I’m there is the small marina town of Ilwaco, Washington.

Located at the southern end of the peninsula, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, Ilwaco has a quiet, historic feel, with weathered buildings, fishing boats swaying in the harbor, and that salty coastal air that seems to soothe the soul.

Things to do in ilwaco washington

While nearby Long Beach tends to be the center of activity, Ilwaco offers a more relaxed, low-key coastal experience. It’s the kind of place I especially enjoy for a solo trip or a quieter getaway with my partner…somewhere you can explore without the crowds.

Down at the marina, you’ll find boats, boardwalk strolls, and the lively Saturday Market in the summer. Just a few minutes away, downtown Ilwaco has a quieter side, with historic buildings, small shops, and seasonal art walks.

It’s that mix of working waterfront, coastal history, and a slower pace that makes Ilwaco such a special stop along the Washington Coast.

The Port of Ilwaco marina is the heart of this small coastal town, and where I tend to spend most of my time when I visit. With boats lining the docks, shops and restaurants nearby, plus easy access to the Discovery Trail…it’s the perfect place to start exploring.

Fishing and Marina Life

Ilwaco is a working harbor with an active marina. It is also well known as a charter fishing hub on the Washington Coast, specializing in Salmon, Halibut, Tuna, and Sturgeon.

If you are looking to do some recreational fishing near or on the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the port of Ilwaco is THE spot on the peninsula to book a charter boat.

These places will provide the boat, the gear, and the local expertise to ensure you have a great, safe fishing experience; however, that doesn’t always mean you will catch something, but sometimes it is just about the experience, right?

I also advise you to call ahead and book in advance of your stay.

Even if you aren’t ready to get out on the water, the marina activity…boats coming and going, anglers readying gear, and the buzz of a working harbor…is always fun to watch.

Fishing aside, there’s something relaxing about strolling along the docks and watching the boats slowly rock back and forth in the water… and possibly seeing a seal or a Great Blue Heron.

The Ilwaco Saturday Market

My favorite time to visit Ilwaco is during the sunny summer months when the Saturday Market is in full swing.

From May through September, vendors line the waterfront with a mix of handmade goods, local art, fresh produce, flowers, and small-batch food items. You’ll find everything from coastal-inspired crafts and jewelry to baked goods, jams, and ready-to-eat snacks.

It’s the kind of place where you can grab a coffee, wander slowly from booth to booth, and end up chatting with the people who actually made what they’re selling.

Add in the sound of live local music and the backdrop of fishing boats in the harbor, and it is a classic Pacific Northwest experience.

Explore downtown ilwaco and seaview

Just a short distance from the marina, downtown Ilwaco offers a quieter, more historic feel that’s worth taking the time to explore.

Here you’ll find older buildings, small shops, and local galleries that reflect the town’s long coastal and maritime history. It’s a slower-paced area compared to the marina and a nice place to wander without any real agenda.

In the summer months, this is also where the Sunday Art Walk takes place, with galleries and local businesses staying open later and showcasing regional artists. It’s an easy, relaxed way to spend an evening, especially if you’re in the mood to browse, take your time, and enjoy a quieter side of town.

You can also grab a glass of wine or a cocktail at nearby spots, like Rae Rae’s Tavern, before or after strolling through the galleries, making it an easy, laid-back way to spend a summer evening on the coast.

Just nearby, Seaview has a similar historic charm with its quiet streets, Victorian-style homes, cute, coastal cottages, and small local shops. While it doesn’t have the same level of activity as Ilwaco or Long Beach, it’s a nice place to wander for a bit.

At times, it shares in the broader peninsula events and seasonal energy, but overall, Seaview feels more like a peaceful extension of the area rather than a destination for events.

Right at the marina is the beginning of the Discovery Trail, which connects several parts of the peninsula and eventually leads toward Cape Disappointment.

Just look for the big brass sculpture of a California Condor…that is the start of your journey.

This 8.5-mile mostly paved Discovery trail will lead you through lush coastal forest, past multiple educational plaques, art and sculptures, grassy dunes, boardwalks, historic sites, and offers expansive ocean views.

This trail is easily used for walking, hiking, running, or biking. It is suitable for most people as there are multiple access points, it is mostly paved, and it is mostly flat. It is also dog-friendly, making it a great way to make sure both you and Fido get your steps in.

Cape Disappointment State Park

No visit to Ilwaco would be complete without exploring Cape Disappointment State Park.

Despite the gloomy name, it’s actually one of the most beautiful spots on the Washington Coast. The park is home to dramatic cliffs, scenic hiking trails, and two historic lighthouses.

The Cape Disappointment area is one of my favorite places to explore when I visit, and is also a great place to go for watching the incredible King Tides.

Watching the huge waves crash against the massive rocks of the jetty and cliffs below the majestic lighthouse is an amazing experience.

There are two historic lighthouses to see here…Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and the North Head Lighthouse.

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse is the oldest in Washington State, and is also my favorite lighthouse in Washington State.

At 65 feet tall, it sits atop the rocky cliffs, its weathered black-and-white stripes contrasting with the rocky cliffs, overlooking where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.

The North Head Lighthouse, also 65 feet tall, is open for tours in the summer and offers incredible views from the top.

Be sure to explore the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, where, along with interesting artifacts and information on the expedition and other local history, it is a great spot to view the Cape Disappointment lighthouse…in case you are not up for the mile-long round-trip hike to the base of the lighthouse.

You can also explore the scattered and partially buried concrete remains of Fort Canby, an old military installation that once guarded the mouth of the Columbia River.

Before leaving the park, make sure to stop at Waikiki Beach, a stunning little cove filled with driftwood, tucked below the cliffs that feels almost hidden away from the rest of the world.

Between the history, the rugged coastline, and the dramatic ocean views, Cape Disappointment is a fascinating place to wander for an afternoon or spend the day.

Where to stay in ilwaco washington

Ilwaco, Washington, has some great options for making a weekend out of your visit to the peninsula.

It is perfect for an intimate couples getaway or a solo stay, just you, a little self-care and relaxation…or you and your furry travel companion…ready to hit the trails and the beach together.

Inn at Harbor Village

The Inn at Harbour Village is a beautiful, boutique hotel just a few minutes’ walk from the marina. This is a unique stay because the hotel was once a Presbyterian church, and you can really feel the history as soon as you pull up.

The cozy, old-world vibe of this adults-only hotel makes it perfect for couples wanting to reconnect…or for anyone like me, who loves a little history mixed with a touch of quiet pampering.

Between the comfy bed, charming decor, a cozy parlor for evening wine and cookies, and a homemade breakfast in the morning…you really can’t go wrong.

It also falls into that sweet spot of being a more comfortable, boutique-style stay without feeling over-the-top or out of reach.

The pearl inn bed and breakfast

For a quieter, more intimate stay, the Pearl Inn Bed & Breakfast is a beautifully restored historic home located in the heart of Ilwaco.

While it’s not right on the marina, it’s still close to everything and offers a more tucked-away feel, perfect if you’re looking for a leisurely retreat.

The rooms are super cozy and thoughtfully decorated, and the homemade breakfast each morning really gives it that authentic Bed & Breakfast feel.

Being another adults-only option, it’s great for couples or solo travelers who want something a little more lowkey…a place where you can unwind after a day of exploring and just melt into the moment.

It also falls into that comfortable mid-range spot, offering a more intimate experience without going into higher-end pricing.

At the helm hotel and pub

For a more elevated stay that puts you right at the heart of the marina, At the Helm Hotel & Pub is an excellent choice.

This adult-only hotel has a high-end coastal vibe with its nautical themes, comfortable bedding, in-room Nespresso, harbor views, a complimentary glass of beer or wine at check-in, and breakfast brought to your room in the morning. A pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

The Waterline Pub is on-site, offering locally sourced seafood dishes, craft beers, and wine, and the marina is a few steps away, making it easy to head out and start your coastal adventure.

It’s a great option for couples looking for a romantic getaway or for a solo traveler wanting a comfy place to unwind… preferably in the provided extra-cozy bathrobe with a glass of wine after a day of exploration.

One thing to note…not all rooms have harbor views. Some face the parking lot, so if a view matters to you, it’s worth double-checking when you book.

This hotel leans toward the higher end for Ilwaco, but the location and little extras can make it well worth it, especially if you’re looking to treat yourself a bit.

My go-to place to stay in Ilwaco, Washington is the Salt Hotel & Pub, which sits right on the marina at the Port of Ilwaco, where the summer Saturday Market takes place.

The rooms are modern and simple, with comfy beds, nautical touches, and some offering views of the harbor and the Columbia River.

It’s a funky little boutique hotel with a laid-back coastal vibe, and the restaurant serves great food with incredible views of the marina.

This is also a great option if you’re traveling with your furry friend, as the rooms are pet-friendly for an additional nightly fee.

The location really can’t be beat. Sitting right on the waterfront, it’s also where the Discovery Trail begins…making it easy to head out for a walk as soon as you step outside, whether it’s just you or you and your four-legged sidekick.

It’s one of those places that hits that sweet spot…comfortable, well-located, and a more affordable way to stay right in the middle of everything.

Heidi’s Inn

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, Heidi’s Inn is a simple, no-frills place to stay that puts you close to Cape Disappointment and the southern end of the peninsula.

The rooms are basic and not as updated or cozy as some of the other options in Ilwaco, but they offer what you need for a clean, easy spot to catch some Z’s after a full day’s excursion on the coast.

One of the standout things here is the friendly, welcoming staff, along with the fact that it’s pet-friendly, making it a great choice if your dog is on the trip with you.

This is a good option if you plan to spend most of your time out hiking and sightseeing and just need an affordable, convenient place to come back to at the end of the day.

A Perfect Stop on a Long Beach Peninsula Trip

When I visit Ilwaco, it is always part of a greater Long Beach Peninsula Getaway.

That’s the beauty of the peninsula…it’s basically a coastal package deal…charming little towns, each with its own personality, all connected by 28 miles of beautiful, sandy, and drivable beach.

Just up the road from Ilwaco, Long Beach offers a more lively, classic beach town experience with shops, restaurants, and plenty of activity.

Nearby, Seaview has a quieter, historic feel with charming coastal homes and small local spots that are perfect for a slow wander.

Further north, Ocean Park has always felt a bit more laid-back and personal to me. It’s a place that is filled with memories of annual Fourth of July vacations, family fun, and festive coastal energy.

Perfect for fellow history lovers, Oysterville is the peninsula’s oldest town. It is a charming coastal village complete with beautifully restored homes, a schoolhouse, a little white church, and an old oyster cannery, all of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Don’t forget to stop at the Oysterville Sea Farms to enjoy some fresh oysters with an amazing view of Willapa Bay.

At the very top of the peninsula, Leadbetter Point State Park and Willapa National Wildlife Refuge offer a completely different experience, with beautiful marshy beaches, coastal forests teeming with wildlife, and miles of trails to roam and breathe in that rejuvenating, coastal air.

Since the drive from the Seattle–Tacoma area is around 3-4 hours, and from Portland is 2-3 hours, it’s worth spending at least a night or two here so that you can take your time and get the full Long Beach Peninsula experience.

Why Ilwaco Is Perfect for a Quiet Coastal Escape

For me, Ilwaco is the place I come to when I want to experience the Washington Coast at a slower pace.

It’s not about busy boardwalks or crowded beaches…it’s about wandering the marina, exploring historic spots, and taking your time without feeling rushed. It’s the kind of place that works especially well for a solo trip or a quiet getaway, where the plan is simply to explore and enjoy the moment.

While Long Beach offers more activity and energy, Ilwaco gives you something different…a quieter, more grounded coastal experience that still connects you to everything the Long Beach Peninsula has to offer.
